Imporor Haileselasie The first

Emperor Haile Selassie’s Family(የኃይለሰላሴ ቤተሰብ)

Queen Menene Assfaw

Empress Menen Asfaw  was the wife of Emperor Haile Selassie.
Empress Menen was born on April 3, 1891 (መጋቢት 26, 1885) in the district of Ambassel of Wollo province. She was Christened there and given the baptismal name of Wolete Giorgis (Daughter of Saint George). Her father was Jantirar Asfaw of Ambassel, the heir of what may be the oldest hereditary title of nobility in the world to survive into the 20th Century. Ethiopia had very few hereditary titles, and the title of Jantirar dates back to Axumite times, having been the title of the ruling family of Ambassel and governors of the mountain fortress and monastery of Amba Gishen. Her mother was Woizero Sehin Mikael, daughter of Ras (later Negus) Mikael of Wollo by his first wife Woizero Fantaye Gebru.

Through her father, Empress Menen was a descendant of Emperor Gelawdewos by his daughter Enqulal. Through her mother’s mother Woizero Fantaye Gebru she was a descendant of Emperor Susenyous the Catholic via the Seife Melekot line. Through her maternal grandfather Negus Mikael King of Wollo and his Mammadoch clan, Empress Menen could trace descent from the Prophet Mohammed himself.
